A Person Search that comes up empty isn't a dead end — ListPlus offers a few
next steps depending on what it did and didn't find. This topic covers all of
them: tightening the search, look-alike matches, an AI web-research fallback
for that one person, and when to switch to Segment Search instead.

## First: tighten the search

Most "not found" results come down to spelling or a name that's too common.
Double-check the spelling, and add whatever you know — the company, the
city, or the person's role — since a last name on its own isn't enough for
ListPlus to show candidates. If you have it, type the full name with the
company ("Jane Doe, Airrange") rather than just the last name.

## Similar names and look-alikes

When you search with both a first and last name but nobody matches both,
ListPlus shows a **"No [name] found in [city]."** (or **"No [name]
found."**) message, with the note **"No matching entry in the profile
databases. AI research scans the open web — company sites, imprints, press,
directories."** Below it are any people who are only a partial match — same
last name with a different first name, or vice versa — under **Similar
names — same last name, different first name**. Each of these look-alike
cards carries ✓/✗ badges for **Last name**, **First name** and, if you
searched with a location, **Location**, so you can see exactly why it's
only a look-alike, not a match. Click one if it turns out to be the right
person after all — it opens the profile like any other pick and loads its
basics (about 0.75 credits, each part only charged if found); otherwise use
**Refine search** to add a location or role.

If ListPlus identifies the company but no personal profile, the page shows
the company card. Click **Enrich** (Anreichern) on it to try a
name-and-company lookup from the contact add-ons; each one shows its price
first.

## Let AI research the web for this person

If nobody matched the name you searched, ListPlus offers **AI web
research** (Per KI im Web recherchieren). It researches a named person, so
include the name you're looking for. It's a separate AI agent that searches
the open web — company sites, imprints, press, directories — rather than
profile databases, so it can turn up people no database has, and it takes
about 30 seconds; it streams its steps live and, at the end, shows whatever
it could establish, plus links to the sources it used. Starting it needs a
signed-in account and a positive credit balance. If it found an email,
phone, website, company or address, click **Use as contact**: the findings
become the result on the page, are kept in Saved automatically, and can be
added to a list with **Add to list**. If you don't click it, the findings
aren't kept. If nothing turns up, it says "Nothing reliable found on the
open web." It costs 3 credits, but only when it actually delivers an email

## Looking for a group instead? Use Segment Search

If your search actually describes a role or type of person rather than one
individual, ListPlus recognizes that upfront and offers to open it in
**Segment Search** (Segmentsuche) instead — see "[Person Search](https://listplus.ai/en/help/find-contacts/person-search)" for that flow. If
a role question with specific filters (like headcount, funding or
technology) comes up empty, ListPlus additionally offers a **Try Segment
Search** button, since a database
filter search may succeed where a single lookup didn't.

## Why some people can't be found

ListPlus relies on public web sources and its data providers, so some
people simply aren't findable. Common reasons a real person still doesn't
turn up: they keep their LinkedIn profile private or don't have one, they
started their current role too recently for it to show up anywhere yet, the
name is common enough that nothing distinguishes them without more detail,
or there's a typo or unusual spelling in what you searched. Adding a
company, city, role, or trying alternate spellings usually resolves this.

## Did a search with no result cost anything?

Understanding your input and the list of matching people are always free,
and almost every paid lookup, including AI web research, is only charged
when it finds something. The one exception: for a signed-in search by name
and company where ListPlus has no LinkedIn URL for the person, it may
automatically run a LinkedIn Profile Search, which costs 1 credit per
attempt even without a match. See "Person Search: basics and profile

## For advanced users

The **Try Segment Search** hand-off only appears when the failed role
question carried structured filters (industry, headcount, funding stage or
recent funding, technology, job-change window, or a verified-email/mobile
requirement). It appears under **"The web sources give no clear answer. Next options:"**. AI
web research needs at least a full name or a first and last name — it isn't
offered for a search that was only an email or a domain, since there's no
name to research from; for those, re-run the search with the person's name
instead.

Other messages you may see: a hint such as **"Add First name + Last name to
run "…""** tells you which details would unlock the next lookup. **"I couldn't
recognize a contact in that input. Try "Lastname, Company", an email
address, or a LinkedIn URL."** means your text wasn't read as a person. If
you pick a candidate and the profile shows **"Nothing found"**,
no profile data could be loaded for that person — go back and try another
candidate or add details. In the look-alike view, a city or country chip
marked **"· no match"** means none of the candidates is in that location.

## FAQ

### The person I searched for wasn't found — what can I do?

Check the spelling and add the company, city or role — a last name alone isn't enough. If ListPlus shows look-alike candidates, check whether one of them is actually the right person; otherwise start the AI web research offered on the results page, which costs 3 credits but only when it actually delivers an email or phone number.

### ListPlus shows people with a similar name but not mine — what now?

That's the "Similar names — same last name, different first name" list: people who share only part of the name you searched, shown with ✓/✗ badges so you can see why each one is just a look-alike. If none of them is right, click Refine search and add a location or role, or start the AI web research option shown above the list.

### What do the ✓/✗ badges on a candidate mean?

A green check means that candidate's Last name, First name or Location matches what you typed, and a grey cross means it doesn't; the Location badge appears only when you searched with a city or country. They only appear on the look-alike list, to show at a glance why a candidate is only a partial match rather than an exact one.

### What is the AI web research and when should I use it?

AI web research is a fallback search agent for one specific person that ListPlus offers when the regular lookup finds nobody or only look-alikes. Instead of profile databases, it scans the open web — company sites, imprints, press, directories — so it can find people no database has. It needs a signed-in account and costs 3 credits, charged only when it delivers an email or phone number.

### How long does AI web research take and where do the results appear?

### Was I charged even though nothing was found?

Usually not — understanding your search and the candidate list are free, and add-ons and AI web research are only charged when they find something. The exception is the automatic LinkedIn Profile Search that ListPlus may run for a name-and-company search when it has no LinkedIn URL for the person: it costs 1 credit per attempt, even without a match.

### Why can't ListPlus find this person at all?

Usually because they have no public LinkedIn profile or keep it private, they started their current role too recently to show up anywhere, the name is too common without more detail, or there's a typo in what you searched. Try adding a company, city or role, or double-check the spelling.

### I only have their email and nothing comes back — what now?

An email or domain search skips the candidate picker and loads a result directly, so if that address genuinely returns nothing, AI web research can't be started from it either, since that fallback needs a name to research. Try searching by the person's name and company instead, if you know them.

### The person ListPlus found is the wrong one — what do I do?

Close the profile, go back to the candidate list and click Refine search (next to "Not the right one?"), then add a location, role or the company and search again. On look-alike cards, the ✓/✗ badges show which of last name, first name and location didn't match. Opening the wrong profile has already loaded its basics (about 0.75 credits, each part only charged if found).

### Does ListPlus ever suggest Segment Search when a person search fails?

Yes — if a role question like "who is the CEO of X" comes up empty and included filters such as industry, headcount, funding or technology, ListPlus shows a "Try Segment Search" button that opens the same search in Segment Search (Segmentsuche).
