How Segment Search filters work

Segment Search's filter panel has 30+ filters grouped into four tabs. This topic covers how the groups are organized, how filters combine, and the Exclude, match-mode and suggestion mechanics. For how a search runs, what it costs and how results look, see "Segment Search: the audience database".

The four groups#

  • Person — job title, seniority, department, person name, location, years of experience, time in role, time at company, max per company.
  • Company — company name/website, industry, employees, HQ location, founded year, revenue, keywords, company type, NAICS/SIC codes.
  • Signals — funding, technology used, hiring activity, open job postings, headcount growth, email provider, job change (currently "Not available").
  • Reachability — Contact data: has a verified email, has a verified mobile, or both; ticking both shows a "Match" toggle (all/any, all by default).

AND across filters, OR within one#

Setting several filters narrows the search — Job title AND Location AND Industry all have to match. Inside one filter, adding several values (e.g. three job titles) is an OR-set — any one of them can match. Company Keywords has a "Match: any/all" toggle to switch that one filter from OR to AND.

For advanced users#

Excludable filters (job title, seniority, location, company, company HQ, industry, keywords, technology, NAICS, SIC, company website) show an Exclude section inside the same pill — values there are removed from the results instead of required. Department doesn't support Exclude (our data provider can't combine include and exclude on that field). Job title also has a Title match toggle: Fuzzy (default, catches close variants) or Exact (literal match only). There's no separate Boolean search syntax (no "CEO AND NOT CTO" box) — combine multiple filters for AND, add several values to one filter for OR, and use Exclude for NOT.

What are the filter groups in Segment Search?#

Filters are grouped into four tabs: Person (job title, seniority, location, department, years of experience, time in role/company), Company (industry, employees, HQ, revenue, keywords), Signals (funding, technology, hiring, headcount growth, job change), and Reachability (has a verified email or mobile). Open Segments, then the filter panel, to switch between tabs.

Do filters combine with AND or OR?#

Different filters combine with AND — every filter you set has to match. Inside one filter, adding multiple values (three job titles, say) is an OR-set, so any one of them counts. Company Keywords has its own "Match: any/all" toggle to require all keywords instead of any.

How does Exclude work?#

Filters like job title, location, industry, company, company HQ, keywords, technology and NAICS/SIC show an Exclude section inside the same pill — values you add there are removed from the results. It's not available on Department, since the provider can't combine include and exclude on that one field.

What's the difference between Fuzzy and Exact for job titles?#

The Job title filter has a "Title match" toggle, which appears once you've added at least one title. Fuzzy (the default) also catches close variants of the titles you list; Exact only matches the literal title text, and both apply to every job title chip in that filter.

There's no separate Boolean search box. You get the same effect by combining filters: set Job title to CEO, use its Exclude section to remove CTO, and add other filters (location, industry) as additional AND conditions.

Which filters must I pick from a suggestions list?#

Location, Company HQ and Industry only accept values from the suggestions that appear as you type — our data provider's database only accepts its own values for these three. You need to be signed in to see suggestions; as an anonymous visitor, use "describe your audience in a sentence" instead, which sets these filters for you.

Why is the Job change filter greyed out?#

Job change is marked "Not available" and can't be selected at the moment. To find people new in their role, use "Time in role (months)" or "Time at company (months)" in the Person tab instead.

Can I type "DACH" or "SaaS" directly into a filter?#

Typing a region ("DACH", "EMEA", "Benelux") or a vertical ("SaaS", "Fintech") works when you use "describe your audience in a sentence" — it's automatically expanded into the matching countries or industries. Typed directly into the Location or Industry filter by hand, use the specific country or industry name from the suggestions instead, since these two only accept exact database values.
